SEVENTEEN 12th Mini Album 'SPILL THE FEELS' - EP

Album ∙ K-Pop ∙ 2024

A month after their headlining performance at Lollapalooza Berlin and aligned with the launch of their fourth world tour, K-pop group SEVENTEEN released SPILL THE FEELS. The six-track mini album is the 12th for SEVENTEEN, who debuted with “Adore U” in 2015, and marks a transitional period for the 13-member squad. SPILL THE FEELS is the final release before most of the members will begin taking turns completing mandatory military service.

Subdued and groovy, lead single “LOVE, MONEY, FAME” brings in American producer DJ Khaled for a track about an enduring affection, perhaps towards SEVENTEEN’s fans, known as CARATs. The theme of love continues with the house track “Eyes on you,” a collaboration with British DJ and producer Shift K3Y that sings about a “heart rate that matches the same BPM.” “1 TO 13” is the final all-member track on the album. Self-referential and upbeat, the track calls back to SEVENTEEN’s debut: “When I first met you/Since May, all my seasons are only you.”

The second half of SPILL THE FEELS breaks things up into unit songs. In an old-school piano ballad perfect for the noraebang, “Candy” has vocal unit Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, and Seungkwan belting about a sweet love: “We love each other like candy/Even just a little word can make you feel better.” The performance unit’s Hoshi, Jun, The8, and Dino take over for “Rain,” which uses synth-driven funk and the oft-called-upon metaphor of rain to express the frustration of searching for a connection: “Me standing alone in a forest of people/Am I looking for someone who will understand my heart?”

Finally, the hip-hop unit’s S. Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon go heavy on the Auto-Tune and the sensuality to express their desire in “Water”: “Turn it up, I'll make you hotter/I'm sucked in deeper like water.” As an album, SPILL THE FEELS highlights the eclectic talents of a K-pop group at the top of their game.
