Trill Bill

Image
Trill Bill Album ∙ Hip-Hop/Rap ∙ 2024 Kodak Black Despite the rollercoaster that is the Florida rapper’s personal life, Kodak Black’s steady stream of new music never falters. Just a month after the release of a mixtape,   Dieuson Octave , which took its title from his birth name, arrives   Trill Bill , his eighth studio album. For a man still in his twenties with such a world-weary rasp it’s surprising to hear just how nimble his flow can be, with a knack for unpredictable wordplay reminiscent of mixtape-era Wayne. (Kudos if you saw it coming when he rhymes “Make my gat go bang” with “Kurt Cobain” on “Maybach Van.”) Surprising too are   Trill Bill ’s many tender moments—as he croons over sweet piano chords on “One Piece Left” (“I got one more piece of my heart left/And I’ve been saving it for you”), or recounts a meet-cute on “Dirty Revolver”: “She said, ‘You Haitian and a Gemini, boy, I already know you trouble, but LOL, text me.’”

The Party Never Ends

Image
The Party Never Ends Album ∙ Hip-Hop/Rap ∙ 2024 Juice WRLD Perhaps it’s true that more unreleased music from the late Juice WRLD is never a bad thing, particularly for fans who grew up alongside the beloved rapper’s melancholy melodies. His third (and ostensibly final) posthumous album, released just shy of the five-year anniversary of his tragic death in 2019, fills the void with 18 more tracks of misfit music. The themes of   The Party Never Ends   are familiar: doomed love, vicious cycles, numbing out, and fighting demons, sung in an anguished warble over emo-inflected trap beats. But it’s profoundly chilling to hear Juice deliver lines like “Oxycodone knows my soul, makes me whole/Death melodies on my stereo” (“Oxycodone”), or when he concludes on “Misfit,” “I was pretty cool in my last life.” Nor does it feel much like a party when Eminem, one of Juice’s biggest inspirations, recounts his own struggles with addiction on “Lace It”: “Do not think I take it for granted that ...

LOS 9 DE FERXXO Y SKY ROMPIENDO

Image
LOS 9 DE FERXXO Y SKY ROMPIENDO Album ∙ Urbano latino ∙ 2024 Feid   &   Sky Rompiendo Hitmaking producer Sky Rompiendo has played a crucial and consistent part during Feid’s rise to Latin superstardom. Their collaborations like “Feliz Cumpleaños Ferxxo” and “Normal,” to name but a few, impacted the global charts and became fan favorites. As the self-explanatory title states,  LOS 9 DE FERXXO Y SKY ROMPIENDO  once again combines the respective powers of both artists, this time as one concise set. Naturally, reggaetón reigns here, by way of the throb and thump of “ESTOY PUTIAO” with Dei V and the decidedly futurist perreo edge of “KLKHAY.” On “PPCP,” Sky’s fusion of delicate piano with a rugged beat is made even more marvelous by Feid’s luxe lyricism. Still, they’re arguably even more intriguing a pair when they venture away from dembow-driven material and take bigger genre swings, noticeably so on the hip-hop groover “11PM EN ST. REGIS” and the R&B-coded Majid...

BUENAS NOCHES

Image
BUENAS NOCHES Album ∙ Latin ∙ 2024 Quevedo At the start of 2023, Quevedo unveiled his debut album,   DONDE QUIERO ESTAR , to considerable acclaim and chart success in his home country of Spain. For his follow-up,   BUENAS NOCHES , he makes a more pronounced pivot toward pop, albeit in a multifaceted manner. Opener “KASSANDRA” glistens with nostalgic synthesizer flourishes as he admires a powerful woman from afar. “DURO” maintains that maximalist bent, an aesthetic that suits the breakup ruminations of “NOEMÚ” and the playboy apologies of “IGUALES” well. He plays well with others regardless of genre, as demonstrated on the electro-rock duet “GRAN VÍA” with Aitana and the slo-mo reggaetón team-up “TE FALLÉ” with Sech. Perreo drives choice collaborations with De La Ghetto (“AMANECIÓ”) and La Pantera (“HALO”), yet his Pitbull-backed “MR. MOONDIAL” goes full EDM in execution. That unbridled dance-floor thump is countered by the sleek hip-hop fusions of “LA 125” with Yung Beef and “...
