A decade after the EDM boom, and a few years out of lockdown’s subdued haze, dance music reestablished its footing as a playground of experimentation. Really, the year was about reclaiming electronic music’s core ethos: providing a space of communal creativity that refuses to be put in a box. Trill Bill Album ∙ Hip-Hop/Rap ∙ 2024 Kodak Black Despite the rollercoaster that is the Florida rapper’s personal life, Kodak Black’s steady stream of new music never falters. Just a month after the release of a mixtape,   Dieuson Octave , which took its title from his birth name, arrives   Trill Bill , his eighth studio album. For a man still in his twenties with such a world-weary rasp it’s surprising to hear just how nimble his flow can be, with a knack for unpredictable wordplay reminiscent of mixtape-era Wayne. (Kudos if you saw it coming when he rhymes “Make my gat go bang” with “Kurt Cobain” on “Maybach Van.”) Surprising too are   Trill Bill ’s many tender moments—as he croons over sweet piano chords on “One Piece Left” (“I got one more piece of my heart left/And I’ve been saving it for you”), or recounts a meet-cute on “Dirty Revolver”: “She said, ‘You Haitian and a Gemini, boy, I already know you trouble, but LOL, text me.’”

LUCKY HER Album ∙ Hip-Hop/Rap ∙ 2024 Mozzy   &   Kalan.FrFr In a year full of West Coast hip-hop greatness, with California very much centered, Sacramento’s own Mozzy has played a not-insignificant role. His two substantial outings,  CHILDREN OF THE SLUMS  and the guest-heavy  BRASH DUMMIES , seemed to further validate the successes he enjoyed during his mid-2010s breakout. No stranger to a collaborative project, he links with the highly skilled Kalan.FrFr for  LUCKY HER , a 10-track effort that sonically bridges the Bay and LA. Thematically, women consume their respective focuses, right from jump on the Rob49-assisted opener “BBL.” Streetwise romantics frequently pervade these proceedings, with Mozzy’s gruff confidence merging effortlessly with Kalan’s melodic delivery on cuts like “EGGS IN THE MORNING” and “MY HOOD.” On the guest front, Skilla Baby brings a cautious cool to the jazz-inflected “SIZE ME UP,” while Shordie Shordie finds a suitable pocket...
