Out of the Blue

Out of the Blue
Album ∙ Afro-Beat ∙ 2025
“The more you do something, the more you grow in it,” Ghanaian singer-songwriter Olivetheboy tells Apple Music. “So, comparing my very first album [2023’s Avana EP] to now, I can say that it’s really evolved in the kind of stuff I write about, my lyrics, my melodies. I used to really write about me alone, but, now, it’s quite easy for me to also tap into people’s feelings, tap into people’s experiences and stuff and then write about them.”
That relaxed sense of confidence runs through the eight tracks that make up the Konongo star’s sophomore EP, 2025’s Out of the Blue. Against Afrobeats production helmed by Beatzvampire, here we find a matured Olivetheboy delving into the highs and lows of relationships, with lyrics that meander from salacious late-night moods to those that fit tender mornings-after.
“It’s literally about love,” the artist born Joel Bonsu explains. “The whole EP is about love and everything about love. You find the intimacy in there. You find the heartbreaks in there. You find everything in love. I feel like when you look at stuff like good songs like ‘Asylum,’ I kind of give people the confidence to say [what they want to]. I feel like that’s my sound. It’s just some soothing and some very aggressive stuff put together.” Here, he talks through the EP, track by track.
“Convo”
“‘Convo’ is literally reassurance. It’s about sitting your partner down, telling them, letting them know that there’s no leaving anybody. It’s the two of us.”
“Bend” (feat. Sarkodie)
“‘Bend’ is not for kids, man. I think the kids can skip this one. It’s for the grown-ups. ‘Bend’ is literally about lovemaking, sex, and intimacy. When I made ‘Bend,’ my people were like, ‘This is something that Sarkodie can make some magic on.’ And he’s already somebody that loves my sound and my stuff, so it was very easy to link up in the studio with him.”
“Tattoo”
“This is also about reassurance. Tattoos are very permanent; it takes a lot to make tattoos. They have to represent something. And, in the song, I say something about, ‘Now I got a tattoo oh,’ right? So, if I’m to be intimate with anybody, it’s going to be you. It’s you all the time. Do you understand? Because I have a tattoo [of you] on my body. It’s forever.”
“Design”
“‘Design’ is just something like a praise song—just praising how beautiful your partner is. There’s a line inside that says, ‘My beautiful design/You don’t need no designer/Cos you already designed.’ It’s just about that, letting them know that they’re so beautiful, they’re so pretty, they’re so elegantly made, they’re perfect.”
“Survivor” (with Qing Madi)
“This one talks about betrayals and not trusting people, especially lovers, because most of the time they betray your trust. This is me tapping into somebody’s feelings, like I said, because I know a lot of people go through that. It’s hard for people to trust people nowadays especially in relationships. Qing Madi did her thing on it. I think she really fit the vibe really, really well. She’s dope. ‘Survivor’ is one of the songs that really are a part of me, really deep inside my heart. I really love it.”
“One Bebe”
“‘One Bebe’ is an announcement to the world and to your baby that all through your years, all through your life, there’s only one person that makes you feel the way you feel, that gives you the butterflies, that makes you feel like a king or a queen.”
“A Fuul” (feat. Mayorkun)
“Shout out to Mayorkun for this one. He did his thing on it. So ‘A Fuul’ is...let’s imagine you’re with someone, right? And you know that thing where people all around just don’t like the beauty of some partnerships, some relationships. Some of them are quite jealous. Sometimes, they get jealous of us and they start to get into our relationship. It’s just me trying to tell my partner that all those people telling her that they love her, they want to be with her and I’m not good for her—they’re just lying. All the ‘I love yous’ they tell her, they’re just April Fools, so she should not listen to them. She should listen to me, and then we grow together.”
“Trees”
“‘Trees’ is about heartbreak. It’s about being broken by the person you trust, being betrayed in a relationship. Just thinking you are going to go to the moon with somebody, and then you [end up] stuck on Earth.”
