Somos Leyenda

Image
Somos Leyenda Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2025 Grupo Maximo Grado “In 2012, when world-ending theories were circulating, I got so stuck that I said to myself, ‘If this happens, I don’t want to be anywhere else but home with my children and wife,’” Christian Félix—leader, composer, and vocalist of Grupo Maximo Grado—tells Apple Music. “And if it doesn’t end, then brace yourselves, because I’m going to give my all.” Thirteen years later, the bet that the Baja Californian made with his future—leaving other people’s projects to focus on his own—seems to have paid off. Grupo Maximo Grado has established itself as the very definition of contemporary corrido, with a special composition style that’s key to the development of the genre. Félix celebrates that mystical anniversary by recording new duets with the cream of the crop from corrido’s last decade. Together they reinterpret Grupo Maximo Grado’s most iconic songs, the ones that soundtracked nights of partying while also laying a found...

Vibras De Noche II

Image
Vibras De Noche II Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2025 Eslabon Armado Released back when Eslabon Armado were still emerging música mexicana talents, the original  Vibras de Noche  from 2020 embodied the essence of after-dark lonesome listening experienced by teenagers such as themselves. The abundance of love songs contained within, including “Dame Tu Calor” and “Te Quiero A Ti,” contrasted with the modernized corridos of their prior work, endearing themselves further to what soon became a massive fanbase. Revisiting that aesthetic with another five years’ worth of experience under their belts, both musically and presumably in matters of the heart, Pedro Tovar’s group makes this sequel truly worthy of its predecessor’s imprimatur. To call  Vibras de Noche II  a return to form would undermine just how far Eslabon Armado has come creatively. There’s evident nuance in the instrumental arrangements on songs like “Eres Arte <3” and “NO VOY A JUGAR,” showcasing not only arti...

MIJA NO TE ASUSTES

Image
MIJA NO TE ASUSTES Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2025 Clave Especial Signed to Fuerza Regida lead singer Jesús Ortíz Paz’s Street Mob Records, Clave Especial swiftly began making their name with singles like “Kalashnikov.” Befitting their label’s name, the rising California act’s brand of corridos adheres to a certain sensibility, evident throughout  Mija, No Te Asustes . The album collects some of their previously released material with an ample amount of new recordings that keeps the same energy. Business and pleasure blur together on “Caravana” and “Tú Tú Tú,” coming together in a strange balance for “Happy.” When that attitude tips towards a purer romantic longing on “Ay Mija,” it offers greater insight into their inherent talents. Naturally, their music industry benefactor JOP comes through for a couple of Fuerza Regida collabs, including the characteristically solid “Como Capo.” Luis R Conriquez makes two appearances here as well, first on the opener “Ni Modo Que No” and later on...

Mi Vida Mi Muerte

Image
Mi Vida Mi Muerte Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2025 Neton Vega Neton Vega’s rise in música mexicana has been an auspicious one. The Baja California singer effectively stormed the genre in 2024, both via singles and his notable placements on two of the year’s biggest albums—Peso Pluma’s  ÉXODO  and Tito Double P’s  INCÓMODO . Benefitting from those wins, his full-length debut,  Mi Vida Mi Muerte , aims to plant his proverbial flag as a soloist while bringing prior collaborators and newer ones along for the proverbial ride. Indeed, those aforementioned acts come through with strong appearances on salacious corridos in the tumbado tradition, the former on “Morena” and the latter on “Chiquita.” The stacked guest list also includes Gabito Ballesteros, Óscar Maydon, and Chino Pacas, not to mention two features from Luis R Conriquez. Those names suggest a certain genre purity, something Vega excels at on solo moments such as “Chrome Corazón” and “M&M.” Still, he branches o...

MALA MÍA - EP

Image
MALA MÍA - EP Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2024 Fuerza Regida   &   Grupo Frontera Back in 2022, Fuerza Regida and then-rising stars Grupo Frontera joined forces for the momentous “Bebe Dame.” As an early cosigner of the Texan act, it makes sense that the California-based project led by Jesús Ortiz Paz (aka JOP) would eventually reunite for another track. Few, however, could’ve anticipated an entire EP’s worth of collaborative songs from the two groups, now ranking among the biggest and most popular in música mexicana. Following Fuerza Regida’s radical and unique  PERO NO TE ENAMORES , a full-length exploration of corridos through a dance-floor lens, this concise set doesn’t so much return to form as find common ground with their tremendously talented Hidalgo County cousins. Comprised of five songs, the surprise-released  MALA MÍA  eschews electronic experimentation altogether, leaning into vocal harmony and lush instrumentation. A musical merger of their core ...

Palabra De To's

Image
Palabra De To's Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2024 Carín León For Carín León, música mexicana is more than just the chosen genre that brought him fame and fortune. That should be obvious to anyone familiar with the Sonoran singer’s growing catalog of work, the genuine love for these sounds and the traditions that guide them evident on his studio recordings as well as some rousing live albums. Meant as a heartfelt return to genre roots following 2024’s hour-long  Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 , this album brought him back to his hometown of Hermosillo to record. With some curatorial guidance from hitmaking figure Edgar Barrera,  Palabra De To’s  primarily favors Mexican songwriters to pay overt homage while perpetuating his country’s musical legacy. Despite the Last Supper theme conjured by the cover art, these 16 tracks are largely devoid of collaborations, with the welcome exception of Luis Mexia on the self-aware “Ocupo Una Limpia.” As such, León’s performances take on a certain inti...

LA ODISEA

Image
LA ODISEA Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2024 Jasiel Nuñez Among the artists who directly contributed to Peso Pluma’s rise to stardom, Jasiel Nuñez stands out. A contributor both as songwriter and guest vocalist on   GÉNESIS   and   ÉXODO , the Guadalajara native increasingly saw his profile as an artist grow through collaborative singles with the likes of Luis R Conriquez, Adriel Favela, and DannyLux. On   LA ODISEA , he collects some of those previously released tracks alongside a batch of new material for a roughly hour-long set divided into halves. The first side contains songs in line with his biggest moments to date, namely the Peso Pluma team-ups “EN MI MUNDO” and “AMIRI,” the latter with Tito Double P as well. Yet he branches out into Afrobeats territory on “PASAPORTE” and explores hip-hop vibes with Alemán on “BB FIRST CLASS.” On the back half, Nuñez opens with the augmented sad sierreño of “NOCHES FRÍAS” before settling into a string of somber numbers abo...

NEXT

Image
NEXT Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2024 Xavi Fueled by a steady stream of viral or otherwise popular singles, Xavi rose to música mexicana prominence in what feels like a relatively short time frame. Major chart moments like “La Diabla” and “La Victima” at the end of 2023 set in motion a momentous rise for the Mexican American singer, his tumbados románticos style resonating for obvious reasons. Several—though conspicuously not all—of his accumulating 2024 hits and fan favorites appear alongside brand-new tracks on   NEXT , an album that serves as a snapshot of his success so far. With seemingly autobiographical corridos like “La Diosa” and “Peak” in the mix, he mirrors the attitude found on the previously released “Corazón de Piedra” or “Poco A Poco.” Proving ever adaptable to whatever the situation may require, he approaches matters of the heart with doe-eyed tenderness on “La Luna X Mi” and brusque desire on “Que Hay Que Hacer.”

ENCUENTROS

Image
ENCUENTROS Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2024 Becky G Becky G’s love for música mexicana used to be one she kept to herself. Prior to 2023’s ambitious   ESQUINAS , the Mexican American superstar had largely limited her Spanish-language work to the pop and reggaetón spaces. Yet as corridos and other related styles surged into the mainstream as part of a genuine, youth-driven movement, her ultimately perfectly timed album transcended the trends to reveal not merely a devotion to this music but a proficiency within it. Triumphant after the warm reception the project received, she returns roughly one year later with the like-minded   ENCUENTROS . Less a follow-up than a companion to its predecessor, the 16-song effort finds her eagerly exploring cultural heritage while making history of her own. Throughout   ENCUENTROS , Becky G expresses herself over themes familiar to música mexicana listeners across generations. The unresolved heartache of “COMO DIABLOS” and the jilted lover’s...

Amor Perdido

Image
Amor Perdido Album ∙ Música Mexicana ∙ 2024 Eslabon Armado Eslabon Armado fans are used to a reliable flow of annual projects from the música mexicana stars. After a relatively muted year and a half,   Amor Perdido   arrives just in time for cuffing season. Following 2023’s guest-heavy   DESVELADO   and its corresponding smash hit “Ella Baila Sola,” this demonstrably more concise and intimate effort largely puts leader Pedro Tovar back into the spotlight to shine on his own. Beyond impressive appearances by Gabito Ballesteros on the empowering single “La Fresa” and ERRE on the far gloomier “Bandolera,”   Amor Perdido   returns focus to the band’s central voice over a series of covers and originals. Opener “Faldita” provocatively propositions a night of unbridled passion, while “Tú Me Encantas” offers romantic sentiments in place of merely lustful ones. Reinventing a Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga signature, they strip down “Me Gusta Todo de Ti” to...
